Toilet Training or House Breaking your puppy

Part 1 : Understanding the anatomy of dogs in toilet training

 Humans communicate in this order...
1. Hearing
2. Seeing
3. Smelling

Dogs communicate in this order...
1. Smelling
2. Seeing

3. Hearing

Both humans and dogs have the same three senses sight, hearing and smelling. We communicate in this order hearing, seeing, and then smelling. However, dogs primarily communicate by smelling, seeing and lastly hearing.

Smelling
A dog’s sense of smell is many, many times more sensitive than us. While we can smell something like curry sauce as one smell, a dog can smell each individual ingredient in the curry sauce. Dogs can also smell the precise direction the sense come from.
When a dog smells something, it can get an entire story in detail. From this, they have the ability to know about another dog or human including what they have eaten, where they have been, what they have touched, and so on. When your dog smells, they are actually reading a story, not just smelling an interesting scent.

Doberman - Guard Dog or Watch Dog?

Whether your Doberman will become a good guard dog or just a family pet and watch dog, it is dependent on how you train your Doberman.

A Doberman is a very muscular, courageous and a very intelligent dog. It has a great ability with speed and endurance that makes them a great guard.

The Doberman has often been mistaken as a mean or aggressive dog. Actually, they are usually lovable and lazy. But, the Doberman can turn into an active clown dog in seconds from their laziness and make you laugh.

Just like any dog, a Doberman needs to be socialized with other pets, animals and your neighbors. Socialize your Doberman to every family member as early as during their puppy-hood. Your Doberman can be a great member of your family.

Do not worry that your Doberman may become too friendly with your neighbors. The natural instinct of the Doberman to protect the family will take over, when a stranger comes unannounced or intruded into their space. Doberman will be very protective of family members. It will not tolerate strangers intruding their space until their owner has introduced them to each other.

Obedience training is a must with a Doberman. You don't want to have a dog that is big and aggressive looking that does not follow your command. Basic command like sit, down, come, stay and no must be responded immediately by your Doberman.

Doberman make excellent guard dogs, military dogs, working dogs, hospital therapy dogs, and loyal family pets. To make your Doberman a guard dog specialized training is needed. Usually, this specialized training is done after your Doberman have excel in basic obedience’s training.

Lastly, if no consistent training is given to your Doberman, it will just be a normal intelligent playful dog but a watchful one.

Well-Trained Doberman Puppies

Dobermann puppies are easy to trained. But, if you do not have a good understanding of the way dogs think and learn, training can be very difficult. You may wish to read my previous post on "Basic in Dog and Puppy Training".

This video below show a very well-trained dobermann puppy. Watch the way, command was given and how the trainer uses positive rewarding way to trained her puppy. Each time the puppy responded correctly to her command, the puppy is immediate given her reward and praise. Through repetition, the puppy respond to command is immediate.

Watch also this video, how the trainer walk in a commanding and lead his dog as a pack leader. No confusing command or action.
The basic in dog or puppy training is our body posture. Dogs read our body language. Do you have a commanding body posture as a leader? If not, your dog will look at you as a weak leader and would not take you as the pack leader.

Basic in Dog and Puppy Training

Dogs Can Feel You, their sixth sense can read your emotion.

Dogs have an ability that we do not possess. They can read energy. In other words, they can read human emotions. They feel them as an energy radiating from our bodies. While you can hide your emotions from another human, you cannot hide them from a dog.

Dogs know how you are feeling. The dog knows if you are sad, nervous, stressed, happy, calm, strong minded, confident, passive or anxious. They feel joy when they know you are pleased, they feel sad when someone dies.

Your dog knows that you are displeased, because they feel your anger and the energy produced. They do not understand why you are displeased, they just recognize the fact that you're displeased.

Let’s say you are upset over something that has happened in your life. Your dog will know that you are upset, but they will not know why. For example, they are not going to reason out in their head that your boyfriend has just broken up with you.

However, a dog does not read negative energy coming from humans in the true meaning of the emotions. When dogs feel that you are worry, sad, nervous, stressed, fear, startled, or passiveness, they will interpret you as having unstable energy, and see you as weak. They simply read it as a weakness, and they will dominate you as your leader.
Additionally, if you feel pity for a dog, they will read it as a weakness in the human, too. Your dog will be unhappy, unsecured and misbehave. They cannot find a leader in you.
Dogs listen best to a calm and stable person. Their sense of your energy will determine whether you are the leader of their pack. If your dog has found you as the leader of their pack, your dog will be happy, secured and well-behaved.
If a dog owner understand the way dogs think and learn, training will be simple and fun. Dog training should begin when it was a puppy. It is never too late to train an older dog. But, an older dog is very much more difficult to train and a professional dog trainer will be helpful.

Owners should consider sending their dogs to a dog training school or training center, whereby professional trainer will evaluate and plan out a training program for each individual dog and its owner. These training school will train both the dog and its owner, not just the dog.

There are professional boarding training school available in most countries. In Malaysia, my home country, there are a few professional boarding training school for dog, puppy and even guard or protection training.

I am born to make you happy.

Do you have the time to take care of me? Not for 1 week or 2 weeks. It is a commitment of my life span as a dog .... 12 to 15 years.

We, dogs, do not have Saturday, Sunday or public holidays. Everyday is just another new day for us.
Are you patient enough to train me without loosing your head? Otherwise, you'll confuse me. I do not need training to get a degree certificate or a diploma certificate. You do not need to send me to a college or university.

Training me is simple but not easy. You need to understand my psychology as a dog and my behavior. No college or university whether conventional courses or online courses can train me.

Are you prepared to walk me every day inclusive of Sunday & Public holiday? Because I do not count and I do not have a calendar. But, you need to be trained in keeping an audit trail or report about my habits and daily characteristic. You don't need a math course or accountancy degree to do this.
Are you prepared to show me consistent leadership? ... putting your emotions aside and seeing me as a dog with patient without getting angry. Consistency and leadership that keep repeating everyday like waking up 7 am, go to toilet in 5 minutes' time, breakfast at 8 am .... just like your college or university timetable.
If you humans better understood us, you could prevent many dog bites and other behavioral problems. Make us understand what you are trying to communicate. Learn how I think will help you to learn how to communicate with me. And, I will make you happy. You will enjoy having me as your pet.
When you see the problematic behaviors in me as a dog, trace your problem back to the way you treat or train me. My abnormal behaviors as a dog includes excessive barking, not following your commands, running off from you, turn the trash upside down, destroying things in your house, chewing your shoes, etc. I am not born like this.... I am confused what is right or wrong??? You confused me :( because you don't understand me. Go get some books written by experience dog trainers like "The dog whisperer, Cesar Millan"

We, dogs, live in the moment. We do not think or plan. We just react innocently. Meaning, I never think or plan, "I am going to bite that mailman today." When we dogs bite human, usually it is human’s fault for not communicating correctly with us. There are no bad dogs, just uneducated owners. Whether you are going to have adorable fun pet or not, it all depends on how much time you spend understanding me, and how much time you spend with me. If you do not have time for me, you probably should not have me as your pet. Both me and yourself will have miserable life.
If you do not understand me, and do not have the time for me, how can I make you happy?
